Common refund questions
Most refunds are processed within 15-45 days of e-verification of the return. Refunds go directly to your pre-validated bank account linked to your PAN. Processing times can be longer during peak periods (July-September).
This usually means your bank account isn't pre-validated or the account details don't match your PAN. Log into the IT portal, go to My Profile → Bank Account, and re-validate your account. The refund will be reissued once validated.
This means the IT Department has adjusted your refund against an outstanding tax demand from a previous year. You should check your outstanding demands on the portal. A CA can help you review whether the demand is valid and file a response if needed.
If your return has been processed (status shows ITR processed) but the refund hasn't arrived, you can raise a refund reissue request on the IT portal. If the status is still "Return Processing", it means the return hasn't been processed yet — which can sometimes take longer for complex cases.
